Sport

Sport forms an important part of life at St. Stephen’s House. There are many opportunities to become involved both socially and competitively within the college, university, and wider community. The college system provides the chance to participate in inter-collegiate competitions during Trinity Term. In recent times, the House has entered teams for croquet, tennis, and sailing. Together with New College, St. Stephen’s House students won the university wide Tennis Cuppers Tournament, and also formed two croquet teams, which made it to the third round of the largest croquet tournament in the world.

Students at the House also take advantage of opportunities to participate in
university sport. Those eligible to compete in the prestigious varsity matches against Cambridge are awarded an Oxford University Blue. Whilst sport at this level is a large commitment, requiring the utmost dedication, it is a worthwhile and valuable chance to make friends and new connections. In recent times, Blues students have played against the All England Tennis Club at Wimbledon, competed in nationwide sailing matches, and won first pace in the R.Y.A. Ladies Team Racing Nationals. As a 2011 season high, Oxford Team Racing won their varsity match against Cambridge.

The nearby University Sport Centre caters for those who might wish to engage in sport on a more
social basis, with gym, pool, track, sports hall, and café facilities. Students at St. Stephen’s House are known to play weekly squash games, frequently arrange football matches, and even run marathons.
