Food and Accommodation

Oxford Colleges traditionally focus around Chapel and Hall. St. Stephen’s House maintains that tradition to this day, with excellent food provided by our chefs. Four meals break up the working day - breakfast, lunch, tea and dinner. Breakfast on a weekday consists of cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurt, with the added bonus of a cooked breakfast after 08:30 on every day but Friday, when we abstain from eating meat by indulging in croissants and pains au chocolat. On a weekday, lunch and dinner are served from the servery and consist of two courses each.

On
Thursdays, dinner is a formal three-course meal, preceded by sherry, and served by the ordinands. This is a great occasion for all students to come together; something quite difficult considering the very different timetables on which we operate. It’s also a great time to bring guests (family, friends and tutors) along and show them the hospitality of the House. There is no formal dress code, but most men wear jacket and tie, and ladies dress with ‘commensurate formality’. After dinner, the bar remains open until the Greater Silence begins. On Saturdays, breakfast and lunch are replaced by brunch; and on Sundays, lunches are served by the House Groups.

We have fantastic cooks who will cater for your
dietary requirements. If you have any particular needs, please e-mail them to the College Secretary before the beginning of term.

Rooms at St. Stephen’s House vary in size, shape and facilities. Some are en-suite, some are larger than others, some include shared facilities such as a
living room or kitchen - these are the flats and houses situated in Moberly Close, our accommodation for married students or those who would prefer to share an apartment rather than have a room in college. Wherever you’re placed in your first year, all rooms come complete with bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and bookshelf. The rooms without en-suite have washbasins. Students are welcome to invite guests to stay in college guest rooms at a much reduced rate.

Other facilities in House include:
  • The college bar, in the Common Room: open Thursday nights, Sundays before lunch, and at Common Room socials;
  • The computer room, which includes a print and photo-copying facility;
  • The college library;
  • The student kitchen;
  • Two laundrettes (one at the bottom of Benson, and the other in Moberly Close); and
  • Four conference/teaching rooms, particularly available to students for teaching practice.
